Developmental Editing
Developmental editing is the first step in the book editing process. It is high-level, structural editing. You can have several rounds of developmental editing. By high level, I mean it includes revisions and suggestions about the structure, organization, and general tone of your manuscript. It does not focus on the line-level issues that we deal with in the next phase of editing (copyediting).
Copyediting
Copyediting is line-level editing. It focuses on reviewing and correcting grammar, sentence structure, clarity, and style. You can have heavy copyediting or light copyediting (or both if you have more than one round of copyediting).
Proofreading
Proofreading takes place after all copyediting is complete. It involves reviewing and correcting any grammar, spelling, or punctuation errors that slipped through the copyediting process.
